Maintenance Mechanic III

Job Duties:

 

This position is responsible for daily operation, maintenance and repair of assigned Dining and Centers buildings including food service equipment repair, custodial equipment repair, preventative maintenance, building maintenance, inspections, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and carpentry repairs.  This position will interact with students, faculty, dining, facilities and other campus staff.  This position is required to follow safe work practices, follow industry standards for maintenance/repairs, have good communication and practice accurate record keeping skills.  This position will service , Price Commons, North Point dining and William’s Stadium concession areas.  This position will back up Memorial Student Center.  Employee shift is 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday with occasional overtime as directed.   This position will be required to respond to a 24-hour maintenance phone on a rotation with other staff.  

 

 

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Receives, responds, and prioritizes service requests
  • Monitors, diagnoses, and communicates buildings' maintenance operational needs according to established policies and procedures from start to completion
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance on building systems and equipment
  • Documents activity on equipment and systems to ensure optimal and safe operation

 

 

Department:

Facilities Management is comprised of Building Maintenance and Grounds, Custodial Services, Heating Plant, Administration, and Facilities Planning and Engineering.  The campus is comprised of 2.4 million square feet on approximately 135 acres including 55 buildings of which 22 are academic/research, 12 support services and 21 for university housing.  The campus has its own utilities of steam, chilled water, data and electricity. 

 

Compensation:

Minimum starting salary of $24/hour.  A six-month probationary period is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic smartphone, tablet and computer skills including email, internet and record keeping.  

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot issues. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred 

  • Visual acuity and ability necessary to read and understand written instructions, information, construction documents (Le. blueprints and specifications), work orders hazardous substance warnings, and manufacturer’s technical information. 

  • Ability to follow directions, work independently and work in a team environment. 

  • Ability to prioritize work.  

  • Ability to schedule and coordinate work with supervisor, maintenance staff, students and other trades. 

  • Experience repairing and maintaining food service equipment. 

  • Experience in facilities maintenance of education, health care and/or food service facilities. 

  • General knowledge of plumbing equipment, fixtures and systems with ability to troubleshoot and repair. 

  • General knowledge of electrical systems and equipment with ability to troubleshoot and repair. 

  • General knowledge of HVAC equipment with ability to troubleshoot and repair. 

  • Experience repairing and maintaining custodial equipment. 

  • Experience using a multimeter and reading wiring diagrams. 

  • Customer service experience. 

  • Preventative maintenance experience. 

  • Experience with computerized work order system software such as TMA system. 

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.  

  • Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability, thoroughness and resourcefulness. 

  • Attention to detail and craftsmanship. 

 

Special Requirements 

  • A valid Wisconsin driver’s license is required for the operation of all state licensed vehicles. 

 

Physical Demands  

Must be able to stand for long periods of time, climb ladders, stoop, crouch, climb stairways, crawl, turn, kneel and balance. 

  • Lifting up to 50lb. objects is required  

  • Breathing masks are required to be worn during some construction duties 

 

Working Conditions and Environment  

  • Ability to lift your arms above your head in order to reach high difficult areas.  

  • Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges.  

  • Sufficient manual dexterity with one hand to be able to operate hand and power tools and manually complete paperwork such as recording items on work orders and receiving documents.  

  • Must have sufficient physical flexibility to kneel, squat, stoop, crawl under cabinets and other low spaces in order to perform the tasks required.  

  • Must be able to tolerate working in confined spaces in order to perform the maintenance and repair when necessary.  

  • Employee must be able to work in partially lit spaces, dusty and/or dirty spaces, on raised platforms/ladders and in extreme temperatures on occasion 

  • Employee must wear safety toe shoes during entire shift and is responsible to wear additional PPE as determined necessary by employee/supervisor during the course of job duties
